Recently, Karan Goel posted a thread about a PGP-alternative for file encryption (that was not Veracrypt which is better suited for drives). He linked an article on why PGP should be phased out (and itshould by the way). While we discussed file encryption in that thread, the article also mentioned signify, an awesome alternative to PGP signing.
I love Nextcloud. Not only does can it be a self-hosted “cloud” storage system, but also has a ton of useful apps to further enhance the experience, and makes it an actual alternative to the Google Suite of apps. Recently I have also been playing with NixOS. As I start to further learn Nix and NixOS, I am pretty confident I will write about its glory. In that future post, and here, one large negative will be mentioned: the lack of documentation/tutorials, especially compared to other distributions. There is the manual and unofficial wiki but much of it is surface-level and/or basic configuration. The manual has a Nextcloud sample configuration, but it even admits it is “very basic.” There is more you must configure to get it to work. I owe a great thanks to the #nixos irc (on Freenode)/Matrix chat for helping me. Without further ado, time to install Nextcloud on NixOS!
My participation in #100DaysToOffload caused me to think about the purpose of this website. #100DaysToOffload pushes me to write more and utilize it, but is not the reason this site exists. Its purpose is essential to write about. It will initially define how my website “works,” for lack of a better term. Eventually, I will adapt this piece into an “About This Site” page.
This is something I have wanted to write for a while. Inspiration for this idea came from a blogpost by Kev in October of last year. The question is still relevant, though: Does using a VPS rather than a physical computer you own count as self-hosting? It definitely does count, and can sometimes be more beneficial.
I have not been very active on my website. Seriously, my first and only post (until now!) was on February 1 this year. After reading through many blogs, especially with the manyrecentsites about promoting individual's blogs, and Kev Quirk's 100 Days to Offload “Challenge,” I got inspired. Although, I wanted to move blogging platforms.
The first thing I list on my Contact Page is my Keybase profile. The only social media profile I list is my Mastodon, and I do that for awareness of Mastodon. The reason why I list it first is a central feature of Keybase, proofs. Let's dive in.
